Engineers Without Borders Iceland (EWB Iceland) is a non-profit organisation and a Start-Up Member of Engineers Without Borders International.
Engineers Without Borders Iceland (EWB Iceland) is a non-profit organisation founded on the belief that Icelandic expertise can make a meaningful difference far beyond our shores. Established in Reykjanesbær in 2025, EWB Iceland became a Start-Up Member of Engineers Without Borders International that same year — joining a global network of more than sixty national chapters committed to advancing sustainable development through engineering.
The organisation was created to fill a clear gap. While Iceland has no shortage of skilled engineers, designers, and technical experts, there had been no structured platform connecting this knowledge with international humanitarian efforts. At the same time, many Icelandic professionals and students were seeking opportunities to contribute abroad — from renewable energy and water management to resilient infrastructure. EWB Iceland was founded to bridge that gap: a trusted link between Icelandic technical capacity and communities in need.
Our foundation was built through collaboration. Universities, engineering firms, public agencies, and civic organisations have all played a role in shaping the initiative, uniting around a shared goal — to apply Iceland’s technical know-how where it can have the greatest impact. As part of the global EWB movement, we gain access to shared learning, established frameworks, and the ability to participate in cross-border projects that deliver tangible results.
EWB Iceland operates on principles of transparency, accountability, and good governance. A founding board was elected at the inaugural meeting, supported by an independent auditor and oversight mechanisms to ensure responsible management. Every financial, professional, or voluntary contribution is directed solely toward non-profit activities that advance our mission: improving lives abroad through sustainable engineering solutions.
Looking ahead, EWB Iceland aims to grow steadily and responsibly. Our next steps include building strong partnerships, creating volunteer pathways for Icelandic professionals and students, and contributing to pilot projects abroad. Over time, we hope to establish a lasting presence within the EWB network — one that reflects Iceland’s strengths while responding to the needs of the communities we serve.
EWB Iceland stands on a simple but powerful principle: engineering can change lives, knowledge grows when it is shared, and it’s true value lies in the difference it makes for others.
